Buying an AC that is too small means it runs all day and never cools properly. Buying one that is too big wastes money and leaves the room damp. Here is a simple way to pick the right size.
Quick tonnage chart
| Room size | Recommended AC |
|---|---|
| Up to 120 sq ft | 0.8 – 1 ton |
| 120 – 180 sq ft | 1.5 ton |
| 180 – 250 sq ft | 2 ton |
| Above 250 sq ft | 2 ton or two units |
Three things that change the size
- Top floor or direct sunlight: add about 0.5 ton.
- More than 3 people in the room regularly: add about 0.25 ton.
- Kitchen nearby or many electronics: move one size up.
Inverter or non-inverter?
An inverter AC changes its speed instead of switching on and off, so it uses less electricity when you run it for many hours. If you use the AC more than 6 hours a day, an inverter model usually pays back the extra price within two summers.
Star rating
A 5 star AC costs more but uses less power than a 3 star model. For bedrooms used every night, 5 star is the better long-term choice.
